About Prilosec
Omeprazole (brand name Prilosec) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production. It is one of the most widely used medications in the world and is available both by prescription and over-the-counter. Omeprazole is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and to protect the stomach lining in patients taking NSAIDs. It provides more effective and longer-lasting acid suppression than antacids or H2 blockers like Pepcid (famotidine).
How It Works
Omeprazole irreversibly inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (the "proton pump") on the surface of gastric parietal cells — the final step in stomach acid production. By blocking this pump, it reduces acid secretion by up to 95%, providing long-lasting relief from acid-related conditions. Maximum effect is reached after 3-4 days of regular use.
